A truck mounted cherry picker is a powered access platform, mounted on a truck or lorry chassis, that allows safe and comfortable work at height. They have specially designed stability outriggers and come in a range of different sizes. They have a huge variety of applications that include: surveying and highway maintenance, bridge and dock inspections, sign installations or maintenance, roofing, and more.

Truck mounted cherry pickers aren’t the only powered access platform option, but they do have a range of advantages that make them a popular choice for working at height. The biggest benefit is mobility. While the majority of other access platforms are static, cherry pickers are ideal for one day jobs or jobs where access to multiple areas is needed. For example, street light cleaning. They are also good for versatile reach and flexibility. Able to provide horizontal movement as well as vertical, they can solve a range of access problems. In addition, some models have x-jib features that means the platform can go over the top of areas such as buildings and allow negative outreach for additional flexibility.

Choosing the Right Cherry Picker

The first key aspect when selecting your cherry picker will be the vertical and horizontal reach that you require for your job. This will impact the size of the truck mounted cherry picker that you need. You must also consider whether you need negative outreach (the ability to move the platform below the base level of the boom) or any other specialist access requirements - such as x-jibs to reach over the top of buildings, bridges or other areas. Smaller truck mounted cherry pickers will have the options for self-drive. This must be done by IPAF trained personnel but can provide more flexibility. Larger cherry pickers will include an experienced operator in the hire price.
