Here comes the flooding

22 January 2018

There is no getting away from the fact that flooding in the UK has increased. From coastal erosion on the east coast to low lying extreme flooding – we have witnessed over repeat winters of late. The news is normally never good this time of year as winter dominates the headlines about snow and ice, then once the arctic has had its fun with us, the melt occurs and flooding in is an ever-present risk.

Only this week reports are rife of flooding on roads causing major disruption, with the A616 (Stocksbridge) in South Yorkshire being flooding in both directions.

The cost to the UK economy is thought to be in the region of £2 billion each year and we currently spend an additional amount of £800 million on flood and coastal defences. This does not factor the £1.1 billion in insurance claims and cost to homes and business.

Areas at risk of flooding in the UK include low level include:

  • Glastonbury
  • Bridgewater
  • Highbridge
  • New Romney
  • Rochester
  • Gillingham
  • Formby
  • Aylesbury
  • Lincoln
  • Scunthorpe

Regardless of the cause, excessive rain, El Niño, Global Warming or weather patterns being adrift. Flooding is something which needs to be recovered from as quickly as possible. Having a contingency plan in place to assist in recovery, so that your office, factory or warehouse returns to full function after a flooding event is imperative to maintaining operational effectiveness.
